Language

The Rai languages is a member of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It belongs to the Kiranti group of the Tibeto-Burman languages branch of the Sino-Tibetan family.

Rai Sub-group

Rais are multilingual ethnic group linguistically they are divided into 25 to 28 lingustic sub-group called “thar” (Set)within this “thars” they have their own languages and dialects At present there are 25 “Thars” Sub-group this division of the Rais into various sub-group allows for the minor alterations in the ritualistic practices while the essence of the traditions remains homogeneous largely.

किरात राई जातिभित्र विभिन्न थर तथा उपथर (पाछाहरू) रहेका छन्। किरात राई जातिमा जातका रूपमा राई र थरका रूपमा तिलुङ, नाछिरिङ, चाम्लिङ, साम्पाङ, पुमा, कोयी/कोयु, खालिङ, बाम्बुले, बायुङ/बाहिङ, दुमी, बान्तावा, थुलुङ, कुलुङ, लोहरुङ, बुङलवा, जेरुङ, छिन्ताङ, छिलिङ, फाङदुवाली, मेवाहाङ, पोहिङ, बेलहारे, याम्फु, मुगाली, आठपहरिया, दुङमाली, सोताङ, लिङखिम जस्ता विभिन्न थरहरू रहेका छन् भने यी थरभित्र पनि आ–आफ्नै पाछा रहेका हुन्छन्। जस्तै, साम्पाङ थरभित्र भालु, बाली, राना, हिराङ आदि। त्यसैगरी, बान्तवाभित्र माङपाङ, मुकारुङ, छाङछा, इसारा आदि अनेकौं पाछाहरू रहेका छन्। यसरी किरात राई जातिको थरअनुसारको आ–आफ्नै भाषा समेत छ।
